If you've been reading the site, I've been in the process going through all the old Garbage Pail Kids series and breaking boxes trying to collect all the sets. I'm taking a break from the original series to break a Hobby box of Brand New Series 1. As before I'm looking for pack fresh cards, which really I expect much more for in 2012 than I would in 1986. So here we go...
Brand New Series 1 Hobby Box Break
What I busted/was expecting:
I busted a Hobby Box of Brand New Series 1 with the code 1-757-50-01-2. Of course I'm hoping to hit something special; gold card, sketch card, printing plate, but when you look at it the odds just aren't in my favor. Hopefully, one hobby box will be enough to get a complete base set.
Results:
Regular Set - 110/110
Doubles - 42
Bonus Cards - 1/10
Green Base - 13/100
Silver Base - 8/110
Black Base - 2/110
Loco Motion - 2/10
Mix & Match - 2/10
Adam History - 9/10
Adam History Green - 2/10
Adam History Silver - 1/10
Review:
Fun break! Collation was excellent. Almost surprisingly I got a complete base set out of one box, with 42 doubles, and no triples of anything. Really the best case scenario for someone only breaking one box and wanting to collect the base set. I also did not get any doubles of any of the insert/parallel cards, which is also nice for collectors. On the base parallel cards, based on the odds, I did a little better on Greens, with 13. Silver and Blacks I hit right on the pack odds at 8 and 2 respectively. Unfortunately on the Adam History cards I should have received 12, but only pulled 9 (One short of the set, dang!). While the Green and Silver Adam History cards were right on pack odds with 2 and 1. Loco Motion and Mix & Match stickers also were right on pack odds at 2 of each. Finally I did hit the 1 per box Bonus Stickers, He-MANNY. Condition and centering of the cards are excellent. Only one minor complaint, I pulled two D. Jay cards in one pack, back to back. Really no excuse for this in 2012.
This is the first set with new artwork Topps has released in 5 years, since ANS 7. I enjoyed breaking this box. New cards are always fun to discover. I liked most of the concepts and art that were used. Sure there are a few duds, but overall I think Topps did a nice job on these. Is there still a market for GPK? I think there is, and I base my opinion on this story. I buy sports cards from Target all the time, and never does anyone; checkers, other customers in line, etc. comment on my choice. I've been to Target three different times in the last week buying GPK packs. Every time while standing in the line either another customer or the checker were quite happy to see these packs. I got a ton of. "I used to collect these!" comments. Then questions about this set followed, with me pointing out where they could find these on the shelf. I think that right there shows Topps might have a hit on their hands, how they sustain it will be interesting to see. Now on to BNS 2....
